Celebrate

$1400

Stephen Wessells grew up in a house where making things was the natural language of the family, and somewhere in that Palo Alto childhood the idea took root that color itself could be a kind of celebration. Decades later, standing before a large blank canvas in his Las Vegas studio, he reached for the greens and reds of something festive — something that felt like a flag raised, a toast made, a room full of people who are genuinely glad to be together. The painting moves from top to bottom like a memory unfolding. The cool, confident green at the top is the beginning of something — a hill seen from a distance, a feeling of hope held steady. Then comes the break: a black line, a pause, a held breath. Below it, navy drips and cascades downward through white in jagged, rain-like streaks, as if the sky itself is letting go — releasing everything it has been holding. And then the red rises to meet it, warm and full and unapologetic, the color of a fire lit for people you love. Wessells has said that painting is his 'wonderful therapy for modern life,' and 'Celebrate' carries that conviction in every mark. His wife Sara and their children Alli and Jack have watched him build these canvases piece by piece, and this one has the feeling of something made for all of them — for every shared table, every ordinary Tuesday that turned out to be extraordinary, every reason to raise a glass and say, simply: this. This is enough. This is everything.
